By Nairaland Forum John Barnes has warned Liverpool that Atletico Madrid will prove a much sterner test than the Barcelona side they beat in the Champions League last year. The Reds were defeated 1-0 in the first leg at the Wanda Metropolitano, the first of three losses in their last four games in all competitions. Jurgen Klopp’s side are seasoned European comeback specialists at Anfield, and turned around a 3-0 deficit against Barcelona in the semi-finals of last year’s competition, winning the tie 4-3.
Liverpool legend Barnes told Sky Sports: ‘I think it’s different playing Atletico Madrid and Barcelona. You say Barcelona is a better team than Atletico, but not defensively. ‘If they have to defend a lead and have 20% possession and not concede that’s what Diego Simeone does. ‘So, it was a huge shock to Barcelona, but I think it will be more difficult against Atletico.’ Atletico’s Saul scored the only goal of the game in the first leg (Picture: Getty Images) After the Atletico defeat, Liverpool subsequently lost their unbeaten record in the Premier League with a 3-0 defeat at Watford, and also crashed out of the FA Cup at the hands of Chelsea. Barnes added: ‘In the last 18 months we can’t criticise them [Liverpool] in any shape or form. ‘There’s a lot being made about they’ve lost three of the last four, I’d prefer to think we’ve lost three, four including one last season, in the last 70 or 80 matches.
Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone admitted there will be few surprises from him or his team on Wednesday as they seek to hold on to a 1-0 advantage in the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie against Liverpool.
A home win three weeks ago gives them something to hang on to and throughout his career as a coach Simeone has produced sides which are masters at defensive resilience.
“I think it is one of our qualities; it is a very solid quality we have,” said the Argentine, who has won two Europa League titles and reached two Champions League finals during his time in charge.

“If I tell you my plans for the game it wouldn’t be logical. I think they [Liverpool] know how we will play after eight years of being here.
